Abstract:
Title: The second life of a historic Museum of Casts: the example of Paul-Valéry University (Montpellier)
Montpellier's Museum of Casts, founded in 1890, is a great example for how to protect and promote the historical heritage of a university's archaeology and ancient art history programs, which later added medieval art history, and because it offers the opportunity to follow the different stages in the constitution of the collections and the evolution of university teaching. The collections illustrate the state of research and teaching traditions at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, when most of the collections were formed. In addition, the Montpellier Museum of Casts, listed as a Historic Monument, is currently one of the only museums in France that continues to exist and operate within an academic setting.
