Abstract:
Title: A comparative approach to the study of archaeological cast collections in France and Italy
"To compare is first to put into perspective" (Detienne 2009, p. 111). The aim here will therefore be to put into perspective the plaster cast collections of ancient art that were created in support of archaeology in French and Italian universities, particularly between the 1970s and the 1990s, on the basis of the common German reference. The analysis, based on the notion of "cultural transfer" (Espagne, Werner 1988), is part of the current of the social history of archaeology and participate in a research dynamic inaugurated in the 1980s (in particular from the colloquium organised in Paris in 1987), itself a mirror and vector of the renewal of these university collections on both sides of the Alps.
Keywords: Plaster casts of Greek-Roman art, plaster cast gallery, pedagogical collections, Greek-Roman plastic, ancient sculpture, history of archaeology, cultural transfer.
